Moving

Big news. I've accepted a job at Visible Path, headquartered in Manhattan. So, I'm moving to New York!

I already feel sad about leaving the Bay Area. It's really a wonderful place. The weather is mild, the food is great, the surrounding nature is wonderful, and San Francisco is, in my opinion, the most beautiful place I've ever seen. I have great friends here, and I'm happy with my job at Vignette. But the prospect of working with Visible Path was an offer I couldn't refuse. Plus, New York should be lots of fun.

I'll be a Social Network Analyst, working on both code and statistical analysis of social networks with Stan Wasserman, who was one of my professors at UIUC.

Boar's Head Mushrooms

About a year ago, I went to Chinatown and noticed some strange looking mushrooms called "Monkey's Head Mushrooms". They were dried, black, lumpy, and hairy looking. I didn't pick one up, but I probably should have.

A while ago (I intended to blog it right away, but forgot), I went to the Tuesday Farmer's Market in San Francisco, and the mushroom stand had a lumpy, hairy, white mushroom called "Boar's Head Mushrooms". I asked, and they were in fact the same thing as Monkey's Head. I bought some at $8 a pound, went home, and cooked it. It had an unusual, spongy, seafood-like texture, and a nice sweetness to it. They were delicious! Here's a picture:

Dave Blood is dead

The bassist for the Dead Milkmen, Dave Blood killed himself last week. This is pretty sad for me, this is the first time a musician I actually like has died. The Dead Milkmen's album Big Lizard in my Backyard was the first tape I ever bought. Most people are ashamed of the crappy first tape they bought just when they are getting into music, but I still listen to mine.

Upcoming Ferry Building places to eat

Evidently, some famous chefs are opening up small casual places, many in the Ferry Building. For example, the chef of Slanted Door will open a kiosk there selling pho. Sounds great, but knowing these guys it will be a bit too expensive to eat there regularly.

Tom the Dancing Bug blog

Hey, what do you know. There's a Tom the Dancing Bug blog. Evidently it just started, I'm not sure who is running it, and I have no idea if it will be any good. But it's my favorite comic right now, so if it's good I'll add it to my little blogroll here.

Mojo Nixon retires

Mojo Nixon is retiring (via Boing Boing). This is a shame. I've seen many good concerts in my day, and Mojo always has the best live show. His music is great, he has something to say, and he doesn't take himself too seriously. I wonder if his tour is swinging by here before it winds up at his final show in Austin?
